An interesting legend regarding the Petrified Forest...

The curse of the Petrified Forest:

There is an interesting rumor that stolen petrified wood from the forest is cursed.  Bad luck will come to anyone who steals or posses it.  Park officials allegedly receive letters and parcels several times a week from people who have stolen a piece of the petrified forest and want to return their souvenir.  Usually the letter within begs them to return the artifact back to the desert, hoping the curse will be lifted.  People would often say that from the time of the theft "nothing has gone right in my life".  The fossilized wood has been blamed for a variety of bad luck.  Family problems, illnesses, victims of a crime... it's all happened after sneaking away with a piece of the Petrified Forest.

So on your visit to the park be smart; leave the petrified wood where you found it.
