Jedediah State Park is a few miles from Crescent City on Highway 101 (North).  Prairie Creek State Park is located about 30 miles south of Crescent City on Highway 101.

Redwood National and State Parks is in an area of Northern California where the old-growth redwood rainforest is located.  It is iin Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.  Redwood National Park (established in 1968), Jedediah State Park, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek State Park collectively make up Redwood National and State Parks.  Park Headquarters is located in Crescent City.  Jedediah and Prairie Creek State parks are included in the pictures above.  Each of these parks has numerous pull-out or parking areas where trailheads begin, allowing visitors a walk through the giant redwood forest.

In the 1950s lumberjacks were attracted to northern California and began harvesting many of the old-growth redwoods for the building needs of San Francisco and the West.  After several decades of unrestricted "clear-cut logging", efforts were started to save the redwoods.  In 1918 Jedediah Smith State Park and Prairie Creek State Park were formed.  In 1994 Redwood National Park and the State Parks were administratively combined for the purpose of cooperative forest management.  Collectively, these parks cover almost 39,000 acres of old-growth redwoods.  Thats about 45% of the remaining old-growth redwood forest.
